Start with the server log and the message shown to the joining player. For the Linux service in the installation guide, read recent output with:

journalctl --user -u aniv.service -n 200 --no-pager

The dedicated server exits during startup

Check that ANIV_COMMUNITY_OWNER_STEAM_ID is your 17-digit personal SteamID64 and that ANIV_DATA_ROOT is an absolute writable directory. An existing database must use its original owner.

Set ANIV_MAP to aneurismiv or misery. The error Configured server map does not exist in this build means the selected map isn't in the installed build. Reusing an old nightmare setting can cause this error.

Validate the Steam installation if steam_appid.txt is missing or doesn't contain 2773280. Keep the bundled Steam libraries with the executable.

If the service reaches its start limit after repeated failures, fix the error first, then run:

systemctl --user reset-failed aniv.service
systemctl --user start aniv.service

The server isn't listed

For in-game hosting, choose Anyone before starting. Friends and Invite only sessions aren't publicly listed.

A dedicated server must finish Steam login, relay allocation, and map loading before it can accept players. Allocation can take up to three minutes. If the log reports steam_fake_ip_timeout, check outbound Steam access and try again after the connection recovers.

Another process must not own local UDP ports 27015 or 27016. Stop the conflicting process or use a separate network namespace or virtual machine. Opening public firewall ports won't fix a local port conflict.

Refresh Community after startup. If a password change reports that the Steam listing was withdrawn, restart hosting after correcting the reported metadata problem.

Version mismatch

The game version is a name such as 20-preview1. The host and joining player must use the same version name, including capitalization.

Update both installations and check Steam's beta selection. The setup guide uses preview. Older builds can have additional compatibility checks, so keep both sides current on the same branch when diagnosing a mismatch.

A player cannot join

Check the rejection message, then the password, local ban, whitelist, and available slots. An empty whitelist allows ordinary admission; a nonempty whitelist restricts staff as well as other players. Read the whitelist limitation before enabling it. If it has locked out every administrator, stop the server and restore a backup from before it was enabled.

Joining also requires Steam authentication and a Nexus account-policy check. If either service is unavailable, retry when it recovers. Community servers don't need a Nexus server credential, and there is no setting that bypasses the player policy check.

A local unban doesn't remove a Nexus ban. A Nexus unban doesn't remove an independent local ban.

Staff commands are denied

Use the Steam account assigned to the saved world's owner or staff role. Only the owner can assign ranks. A moderator can't manage server configuration, and staff can't act on themselves or on someone of equal or higher authority.

Changing ANIV_COMMUNITY_OWNER_STEAM_ID on an existing world won't replace its owner. Use the account recorded for that world.

Settings didn't change

Check the file path, key spelling, capitalization, and double quotes. General settings belong in aniv.cfg; gameplay values belong in customserverrules.cfg. Check the log for a parse error.

Restart for changes to startup settings, the message of the day, or fate overrides. Removing a gameplay setting from a file requires a restart to restore its default. See Apply changes for the limits of reloadservercfg.

If the wrong name appears, check for an old systemServerName value as well as ANIV_SERVER_NAME.

Voice chat isn't working

Choose and test the microphone in Steam's voice settings. Check the game's receive volume, radio volume, push-to-talk bindings, and mute settings. The game must have focus to capture voice input.

Proximity voice depends on distance. Radio voice requires an eligible faction and matching radio channel. Test with another nearby player before troubleshooting a radio-only problem. A server mute prevents that player from transmitting.

Voice travels with the game connection. You don't need to open a separate voice port or install a voice server.

Find the player log

Platform Log location
Windows %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Vellocet\ANEURISM IV\Player.log
Linux ~/.config/unity3d/Vellocet/ANEURISM IV/Player.log
macOS ~/Library/Logs/Vellocet/ANEURISM IV/Player.log

These are the game's Unity player log locations. The dedicated-server examples use -logFile -, which sends the log to the terminal or system journal instead. When asking for help, include the game version, operating system, map, and relevant error messages. Remove passwords and Steam login tokens from anything you share.
